Deadly Protests Rock Kenya—Here’s What Happened

Kenya has been engulfed in widespread protests across more than 20 counties, driven by public outrage over police brutality, economic struggles, and demands for better governance. The demonstrations, which marked the anniversary of last year’s anti-tax protests, escalated into violent clashes resulting in at least 16 deaths and hundreds of injuries. Protesters targeted government buildings, police stations, and businesses, calling for justice for victims of police violence and the resignation of President William Ruto. The unrest has exposed deep frustrations, especially among the country’s youth, over ongoing social and political issues.
In response, the Kenyan government condemned the protests, with Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen accusing demonstrators of attempting a coup and orchestrating an unconstitutional effort to destabilize the nation. Security forces deployed tear gas and barricades to control the unrest, actions the government described as restrained despite reports from human rights groups of excessive force and enforced disappearances. The crisis has heightened political tensions and underscored the urgent need for reforms addressing police accountability and public grievances in Kenya.
